Welcome to 2026! If you are anything like me, you have imagined this year as a year that everything will be better – you know, like we do it every January.
January always arrives full of expectation.
The calendar flips, social media gets loud, and suddenly you’re meant to wake up feeling motivated, energised and ready to overhaul your body, your habits and your entire life. New year, new you… apparently.
But when I speak to women in January, that’s not what I hear at all.
What I hear is tiredness.
A bit of bloating that hasn’t quite settled.
Cravings for warm food (or chocolate) and early nights.
A sense of pressure to “get back on track” even though your body doesn’t feel ready yet.
And if that’s you, I want you to know this straight away: nothing has gone wrong.
January pressure versus winter reality
January sits right in the middle of winter, yet we treat it like a fresh spring morning.
December doesn’t gently fade into January. It crashes into it full speed. Richer food, disrupted routines, less daylight, more stress, more emotional load. Christmas flows straight into New Year, then Valentine’s Day looms, and Easter isn’t far behind either.
Winter is long, especially here in Scotland.
So if January finds you feeling wired but tired, struggling with sleep, craving sugar or feeling foggy and flat, that’s not a motivation problem. It’s a body that’s still in winter mode.
And then we tell that body to eat less, train harder and “fix itself”.
No wonder it pushes back.
Why January diets fail women
This is the part that rarely gets explained properly.
In winter, women’s bodies are already under more physiological pressure. Inflammation naturally runs higher. Blood sugar becomes more sensitive to disruption. Cortisol (your stress hormone) is often elevated from months of juggling, coping and pushing through. And let’s not mention the food and the partying we did in December.
So when you add restriction, skipped meals or aggressive detoxes into that mix, your body doesn’t feel inspired. It feels threatened.
That’s when you start to see stronger cravings, energy crashes, digestive flare-ups and sleep that never quite feels restorative. Not because you’re weak or undisciplined, but because your nervous system is trying to keep you safe.
January diets fail women not because women fail, but because the timing is wrong.
What actually works in January
The women who feel best in January aren’t doing dramatic resets.
They’re doing something far less glamorous: rebuilding rhythm.
They eat regularly, even when appetite feels a bit off. They keep meals warm and grounding. They reduce decision fatigue by repeating simple foods instead of chasing perfection. Slowly, their nervous system settles, blood sugar steadies and energy begins to come back online.
It’s not exciting and it doesn’t sell detox teas.
But it works.
January doesn’t need punishment. It needs steadiness.
B.A.D. Bites: how to support hormones in winter
If you want one practical place to start this week, try this: eat three proper meals a day. And yes that means breakfast too Caroline!
Warm foods tend to work better in winter: soups, stews, eggs, oats, potatoes, yoghurt with nuts and fruit. Leftovers are not a gold mine! They’re often exactly what your body needs.
Skipping meals to “balance things out” usually makes cravings, energy dips and mood swings worse, not better.
This isn’t about dieting. It’s about helping your body feel safe enough to settle.
I’ve put together a Winter Blood Sugar & Energy Guide with simple food combinations that support hormones without restriction. It’s designed for real life, not perfect weeks.
Try one thing from it. That’s enough.
What about supplements?
People always ask this, so let me say it clearly.
Supplements don’t replace food or routine, but in winter they can support the basics when life isn’t ideal.
January is often when I see benefit from consistent use of things like Golden Drops to calm inflammation, Greens when vegetable intake dips, and vitamin D, especially in Scotland.
Not everything. Not forever. Just consistently, alongside food that actually nourishes you.
Support if you want it
January is exactly why I created the support options I offer.
