When Did Feeling “Normal” Start Requiring So Much Effort?

I remember staring at my wardrobe one morning, tired, puffy, anxious… pulling at jeans that fit just a few months ago and thinking:

“I don’t recognise this body anymore.”

I hadn’t changed anything. I was still eating well, moving regularly, keeping up with work, showing up for my family. But my body? My brain? They had clearly moved on without consulting me.

First came the fatigue.
Then the bloating.
Then the sleep issues, the mood swings, the aching joints.
And then, almost worse than the physical stuff, the doubt.

Was I overreacting? Was I just stressed? Was this just “being a woman in her 40s”? I am not even there yet!!

I’ve worked in health long enough to know what’s “normal.” But nothing about how I felt felt normal. And as I started asking around, quietly at first, I realised…

Every woman I spoke to was going through something similar.
And no one was really talking about it, not with any depth, anyway.

What I didn’t need was a diagnosis. What I needed was direction.

At the time, I didn’t even have the language for it. Perimenopause wasn’t something I saw on posters at the GP. It wasn’t something my mum had ever really spoken about. And Google? That was just a rabbit hole of expensive supplements, wildly contradictory advice, and forums full of fear.

I didn’t want a prescription or a meal plan.
I wanted someone to help me make sense of it.

Why was I so exhausted but wired at the same time?
Why was I gaining weight despite doing all the same things?
Why was my skin changing? My brain foggy? My tolerance thin?

I knew there had to be a way through this that didn’t involve ignoring it or overcorrecting with restriction and shame.

That’s when lifestyle medicine stopped being my profession and became my lifeline

I stopped trying to “fix” things. I started listening to my symptoms. To my stress. To my cycle.

And slowly, I started adjusting.

  • I changed when I ate, not just what I ate
  • I shifted my workouts from pushing harder to training smarter
  • I stopped glorifying the hustle and started sleeping more intentionally
  • I gave myself permission to be in a season, not a crisis

And that’s when the shift happened. Not overnight. But noticeably.

My energy started to steady.
My mood lifted.
The inflammation calmed.
I began to feel more like myself. Not my old self, but a stronger, more tuned-in version.

And then something else happened: I got angry!

Because I realised how many women were still stuck in that same place: confused, dismissed, unsupported.

So I built what I wish I’d had at the start.

Not a “fix.”
Not a “programme.”

But a pause button.
A reset.
A space where women could learn, reconnect, and move forward with confidence and clarity.

I call it MenoMAP

It’s a 6-week guided reset where you learn to work with your body in midlife (developed from MenoBlast)

It’s the thing I needed when I was crying in the car on the way to work. When my bra didn’t fit. When I felt like screaming at everyone for no reason. When I just wanted to know what was going on in my own body.

If you’re in that place now (or even on the edge of it) this is your invitation to pause. To reset. To feel supported. To stop being at war with your hormones and start understanding them.

We start soon. And I’d be honoured to walk you through it.
